Traditionally doctors dictated into hand-held tape recorders. The standard, micro, or mini cassette tapes were picked up or sent to MTs. MTs played the tapes in a transcriber with a headphone and foot pedal and transcribed it on their computer. A few doctors, MT services, and MT training programs still employ this system, though it is fast being replaced by digital systems.
